Rain Out: A lockdown series

I often escape

beyond those evening colours

nestled in dusk’s palm

Most of my paintings this year have been on a smaller scale, comprising a series of postcard sized artworks on paper, titled Rain Out. This was a step away from my usual larger pieces on stretched canvas and these artworks were also created using my fingers to apply paint rather than a brush.

Why did my work take this step?

At the height of lockdown, we weren’t able to leave the house unless taking daily exercise or for essential travel. Our movement was restricted and so was the physical spaces we could inhabit.

So, I created around 40 small paintings on paper of scenes, worlds, moments and views to soothe this time where I was not permitted to travel more than a few miles from home.

Opting to finger paint these pieces made sense, it felt like I was connecting with these landscapes, as if the paint on my fingers was the sand between my toes that I missed so dearly.
